What Is Core Shamanism?
Understanding an Ancient Path of Healing & Transformation
If you've heard the word shamanism, you may have imagined something mysterious, unfamiliar, or even intimidating.
For many people, the word brings up images from movies or television that don't reflect what this work is actually about.
In reality, Core Shamanism is one of humanity's oldest spiritual practices. While every indigenous culture developed its own unique traditions, many shared remarkably similar ways of connecting with nature, spirit, and the unseen world.
Core Shamanism is a respectful approach that studies the common principles found across many of these traditions without belonging to any one religion or culture.
It isn't about adopting someone else's beliefs.
It is about learning practices that help us reconnect with ourselves, nature, and the spiritual world in a grounded and meaningful way.
My Path to Core Shamanism
When I first discovered shamanic work, it didn't feel like learning something completely new.
It felt like remembering something I had somehow always known.
There was a deep sense of familiarity that is difficult to explain until you've experienced it yourself.
The more I learned, the more I realized that shamanic healing isn't about escaping reality.
It is about becoming more fully present within it.
It teaches us that everything in nature is alive with spirit and that healing often begins when we restore relationship—with ourselves, with the natural world, and with something greater than ourselves.
My training through the Foundation for Shamanic Studies gave me a grounded framework for this work while honoring the traditions from which these practices emerged. It reinforced something I had already begun to discover through my own experiences: that healing is not about becoming someone else—it is about remembering who you truly are.
What Is Core Shamanism?
Core Shamanism is a spiritual practice that uses specific techniques to access non-ordinary states of consciousness for the purpose of healing, guidance, and personal transformation.
Unlike many religious traditions, it does not require you to adopt a particular belief system.
Instead, it offers practical methods for exploring your own direct spiritual experiences.
Core Shamanism includes practices such as:
Shamanic Journeying to receive guidance, insight, and healing
Power Animal Retrieval to reconnect with supportive spiritual allies
Soul Retrieval to help restore a sense of wholeness after difficult life experiences
Working with Compassionate Helping Spirits for wisdom and guidance
Shamanic Healing to help restore energetic balance and harmony
Ceremony and Intention to create meaningful space for healing and transformation
Developing a deeper relationship with Nature, recognizing it as one of our greatest teachers
Strengthening your intuition and spiritual connection through direct personal experience
Each of these practices serves one purpose:
To support healing, insight, and a deeper relationship with yourself.
Shamanic Journeying
One of the foundational practices of Core Shamanism is journeying.
A shamanic journey is a form of focused meditation that uses rhythmic drumming or rattling to help enter an altered state of awareness.
During a journey, the intention is not to imagine a story or force an experience.
Instead, we quiet the analytical mind so we can receive guidance from the spiritual world.
People often receive symbols, insights, messages, or experiences that bring clarity long after the journey has ended.
Every journey is unique.
Sometimes the guidance is immediate.
Sometimes its meaning unfolds over time.
Power Animals
Many cultures have recognized that animals carry unique wisdom and spiritual qualities.
Within Core Shamanism, a power animal is understood as a compassionate helping spirit that offers protection, guidance, and support.
People often discover that a particular animal has been appearing throughout their lives in meaningful ways.
Sometimes these connections become clearer during a shamanic journey.
Working with a power animal is not about worshipping the animal.
It is about learning from the qualities it represents and allowing that relationship to strengthen your own life.
Soul Retrieval
One of the most beautiful concepts within shamanic healing is Soul Retrieval.
From this perspective, overwhelming experiences or trauma can sometimes lead us to feel as though a part of ourselves has been lost.
Many people describe this as saying:
"I don't feel like myself anymore."
"I feel empty."
"I've never been the same since..."
Soul Retrieval is a sacred healing practice intended to help restore that sense of wholeness.
Rather than becoming someone new, it is about welcoming home the parts of yourself that may have withdrawn in order to protect you.
This is one of the reasons I often say that healing is less about changing who you are and more about remembering who you have always been.
Why Nature Matters
One of the things I love most about shamanic work is that it continually brings us back to nature.
Not because nature is an escape from life.
Because nature reminds us how life actually works.
Trees do not rush their growth.
The seasons do not compete with one another.
Nothing blooms all year.
There is wisdom in slowing down.
There is wisdom in cycles.
There is wisdom in trusting the timing of your own life.
Some of the most profound healing I've experienced has happened not inside four walls, but sitting quietly beneath the pines, listening to the wind, and remembering that we are part of something much greater than ourselves.
Is Core Shamanism a Religion?
No.
Core Shamanism is not a religion, and it does not ask you to abandon your own beliefs.
People from many different spiritual and religious backgrounds choose to explore shamanic practices because they are based on direct personal experience rather than doctrine.
You are encouraged to discern your own experiences and discover what feels true for you.
Is Core Shamanism Right for You?
You may feel drawn to Core Shamanism if you are seeking:
A deeper connection with yourself
Spiritual guidance
Personal transformation
Healing beyond the physical level
A stronger relationship with nature
Greater trust in your intuition
A sense of purpose and meaning
Many people find this work not because they were searching for it, but because something within them quietly recognized it.
My Approach
Every shamanic session I offer is approached with deep respect, compassion, and intention.
This work is never about fear, prediction, or giving away your power.
It is about helping you reconnect with the wisdom that already lives within you.
Sometimes that comes through journeying.
Sometimes through healing.
Sometimes through symbolic messages or spiritual guidance.
Whatever unfolds, my intention is always the same:
To create a safe, grounded space where healing, insight, and transformation can naturally emerge.
Beginning Your Journey
If you've found yourself reading this article, there may already be a part of you that feels curious.
You don't need to understand everything before taking the next step.
You don't need to have all the answers.
Sometimes the path reveals itself one step at a time.
Sometimes it begins with a single journey.
Sometimes it begins with a quiet knowing that you are ready to remember more of who you truly are.
